My experience with Canon EF 300mm 1:2.8 L IS USM lens with a 2X extendor
Yesterday, I rented a Canon EF 300mm 1:2.8 L IS USM lens with a 2X extendor and what a Canon it is!!! That thing is really heavy!
Anyway....I grabbed my camera, tripod and the lens and headed out the door to shoot some Florida seabirds. I headed to Honeymoon Island in search of osprey in the wooded area and egrets on the coastal area. There was not a bird in sight! That is, other than the common seagulls and there weren't that many of them!
After an hour of sitting tight and waiting for a bird to fly in, I packed up my equipment and headed to the fishing pier on the Anclote river. That has been a favorite spot of mine for shooting my very favorite bird...the pelican. When I got there, the pier was loaded with fishermen, but not one sing pelican in sight.
By this time, my hopes were shattered and I found myself looking for ANYTHING to shoot, just to try out this lens. All of a sudden, I noticed a huge army of fiddler crabs....ok, so I got desperate.....
So, during this entire day and after a $50 rental....I came up with nothing worth while. I did, however, learn that I really would like to have a lens like this. One day of rental really isn't enough time to learn how to use it, but I got enough time with it to realize how really cool it is!
I want more!!! I will have to do this again next month!
